Good news travels fast. Thanks to the generosity of Maryland National Capital Area Parks and Planning Commission (MCPPC), we have a new physical presence in the community.
We have a place that the public can identify with. It will be our intake center and a place to put to work all those wildlife supporters who cannot do home rehabbing but want to donate their time and talents to wildlife rehabilitation. It’s a small beginning; but, like the wildlife babies we care for, it will grow fast and it’s up to us to make our new place a wildlife home!
Question: Where is the Center?
Answer: 8700 Dyson Road, Brandywine, Maryland
Question: What’s it like?
Answer: The Center has a refurbished 100 year old farm house, a two car garage and a tobacco barn on three acres. It has a living room, dining room, kitchen and family room on the first floor. Two bedrooms with a bathroom on the second floor and a finished attic. The kitchen will be converted into the main examination room. The living room and dining room will provide a place for baby birds and small mammals when very young. Meeting and greeting will take place in the hall way as you come into the facility.
Older animals and birds will be housed in the garage and prior to release, out to caging around the tobacco barn area.
Question: How are we paying for it?
Answer: Through donations from our supporters. We receive no funds or support from local, state or the federal government.
Question: Who will staff the Center?
Answer: Currently, Lynn is our only licensed rehabber. However we are working with other individuals wanting to help out at the center and thereby learn and gain experience to become licensed rehabbers themselves. We want to encourage other licensed rehabbers in our area to consider working out of the center if they’d like. They should call us and we can work something out.
Question: When will the Center open?
Answer: It is open and operational now. We continue to arrange the rooms and facilities, put away donated supplies, set up caging and other needed capabilities. Visits to the Center need to be arranged in advance by contacting us. We will be looking for individuals who can volunteer their time and talent to help with setting up.
Question: Why Did Feathers and Friends Need a Separate Facility?
Answer: We ran out of space in Lynn ’s home. Each year the number of animals Feathers and Friends cares for grows and with that growth we have an increased need for caging, open space, and volunteers. With a separate facility, we will be able to attract members of the community to volunteer and to donate. As our membership grows, we hope our support grows as well.
Question: How can I help?
Answer: We need each and every one of you! Click on our ‘How Can I Help’ web page.
